Ransomware Attacks Against Banks Are Up 1318% in 2021
Ransomware attacks are up everywhere, in a variety of industries, due to two primary factors.
One factor is that the code and technology needed are far easier for criminals to access than in previous years. Ransomware is now effectively a very profitable cottage industry with a variety of suppliers and products available to criminals.
The second reason is that firms are paying the ransoms. The increase in payment frequency and amounts has turned ransomware into a lucrative criminal operation.
So we have ease of access to tools and strategies, as well as increased payment by victims. That got us to 1318%.
This is where we usually would lay out the strategies for defending against ransomware. The single most effective thing we can do is train employees to spot and report malicious emails without clicking on anything. Phishing continues to be the most common attack vector for these criminals.
This is doubly important for financial institutions because one of the most common strategies now is a double ransom. Not only are criminals asking for money to unencrypt your files, but they’re also asking for a second ransom not to release them to the public.
